| 3/21/2010 | Daisuke Matsuzaka, SP (Bos) | Slowed since the start of spring training because of back and neck injuries, Matsuzaka took a small step Sunday toward his first appearance in a Grapefruit League game, facing Boston minor leaguers in an intrasquad game. Analysis: He threw 32 pitches, 18 for strikes, and then threw an additional 14 in the bullpen after his outing. Matsuzaka is scheduled to pitch in his first Grapefruit League game Thursday after another bullpen session Tuesday, continuing his progress toward returning to Boston's starting rotation. It is unlikely, though, that he will be on the Opening Day roster. |
| 3/21/2010 | Zack Greinke, SP (KC) | Greinke gave up two runs in five innings of a minor league game Sunday. Analysis: Pitching for Triple-A Omaha, Kansas City's Cy Young Award winner allowed six hits, including a home run, walked three and struck out two. He threw more balls, 39, than strikes, 38. |
| 3/21/2010 | Joe Mauer, C (Min) | Mauer has agreed to an eight-year, $184 million contract extension to stay with the Minnesota Twins. The deal announced Sunday covers the 2011-2018 seasons and includes a full no-trade clause. Analysis: Mauer has won three AL batting titles and an MVP award. He is considered one of the best defensive catchers in the game. Last year he hit .365 with 28 home runs and 96 RBIs to help the Twins win the AL Central division. |
| 3/21/2010 | Gordon Beckham, 3B (CWS) | Beckham insists he's not the type to set goals, although he did have one growing up: He wanted to be like Derek Jeter. Analysis: After a quick rise to the majors and a promising rookie season for the Chicago White Sox, Beckham found himself on the move again. Now, he's their second baseman after playing third last season and a key figure for a team hoping to contend in the AL Central after going 79-83. |
| 3/21/2010 | Nelson Figueroa, SP (NYM) | Figueroa appreciates the chance the New York Mets have given him to pitch in the majors, but he admits he is leaving every possibility open to pitch somewhere else - just maybe not Buffalo. Analysis: He doesn't break camp with the Mets, he will explore other options, including any that don't include another stint with the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo. |
| 3/21/2010 | Bobby Jenks, RP (CWS) | Jenks expects to be ready for the season opener after an MRI on his right calf revealed no structural damage. Analysis: Jenks missed his turn to pitch on Saturday because of irritation. He expects to throw a bullpen session on Monday and figures "a few days rest should knock it out." He has a 37.80 ERA in two spring outings. The calf has been an issue for Jenks since last season, when he missed the final 11 games and finished with 29 saves. |
| 3/21/2010 | Kerry Wood, RP (Cle) | Wood believes he'll be back pitching for the Cleveland Indians sooner than expected. Analysis: On Saturday, the Indians forecast Wood to be sidelined for 6 to 8 weeks with a strained muscle below his right shoulder. However, Wood said Sunday that he's confident his timetable to return will be shorter. The 32-year-old sustained a "moderate" strain to his right latissimus dorsi muscle earlier in spring training. |
| 3/20/2010 | Jon Garland, SP (SD) | Garland will miss his next scheduled start Sunday because of a "cranky" shoulder, manager Bud Black said. Analysis: Garland, expected to compete for the No. 2 or 3 spot in the Padres' starting rotation, signed a $4.7 million contract in January with a mutual option for 2011 and a $600,000 buyout. Garland, who is 0-1 with an 8.22 ERA in three starts this spring, has stated that his arm had been feeling better than normal throughout the exhibition season. |
| 3/20/2010 | Colby Lewis, (Tex) | Lewis may have secured a spot in the Texas Rangers' rotation. You wouldn't know it by the way he is approaching his spring starts. Lewis allowed two runs and five hits with a walk and six strikeouts in his fourth appearance of the spring Saturday in a 5-4 loss to the Dodgers. Analysis: Lewis, originally drafted by the Rangers in 1999, signed with the club in the offseason after a two-season stint in Japan. What the right-hander is facing now, he said, is quite different than what opposed him across the Pacific. ``After that first inning he settled in there and pitcher pretty well,'' Texas manager Ron Washington said. ``His curveball had some bite to it.'' |

| 3/20/2010 | Mitch Talbot, RP (Cle) | Talbot improved his chances of making the Indians' rotation with 3 1-3 scoreless innings Saturday in a 12-4 win over the A's. Analysis: The right-hander has allowed just one run in 11 1-3 innings this spring. |
| 3/20/2010 | Travis Hafner, DH (Cle) | Hafner's three-run homer onto a sidewalk beyond the right-field wall capped Cleveland's eight-run second inning off Jason Jennings and powered the Indians to a 12-4 win over a split squad of Oakland Athletics on Saturday. Analysis: Hafner homered for the second time in three days, launching the type of deep shot the Indians hope to see from him during the regular season. Coming off shoulder surgery, Cleveland's designated hitter hit just 16 homers last season - 26 fewer than his career high in 2006. |
| 3/20/2010 | David Price, SP (TB) | Price gave up six straight hits in a four-run inning and 11 hits overall Saturday in a 6-2 loss to the Twins. Analysis: Price threw strikes, but many of them were turned into line drives. "They hit me all over the yard today,'' Price said. |
| 3/20/2010 | Francisco Liriano, SP (Min) | Liriano struck out four in three shutout innings Saturday in a 6-2 win over the Rays. Analysis: Liriano is trying to nail down a spot in the Twins' rotation. ``I was trying not to throw too many (sliders),'' said the 26-year-old left-hander. ``I think my breaking pitch is a lot better than my fastball. I can throw it at anytime, any count. So I'm working on locating my fastball.'' |
| 3/20/2010 | Nolan Reimold, LF (Bal) | Reimold went 0 for 2 with a walk in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Pirates and remains hitless in 21 at-bats this spring. Analysis: Reimold is projected to be Baltimore's starting left fielder on Opening Day, but the Orioles' braintrust may want to rethink those plans since the youngster has looked very bad at the plate. |
| 3/20/2010 | Brad Bergesen, SP (Bal) | Bergesen fell behind by two runs in the first inning, but he retired the last 10 batters he faced as a split squad of the Orioles' 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. Analysis: Bergesen, making his third start for the Orioles after reporting to spring training with a sore right shoulder, allowed two runs and three hits in 4 2-3 innings. He walked one, struck out four and threw 38 of his 56 pitches for strikes. "I wouldn't say I'm right where I need to be right now, but it's just small pieces and continuing to build on it and trying to get back to 100 percent and where I need to be for the season,'' Bergesen said. |
| 3/20/2010 | Mark Buehrle, SP (CWS) | Buehrle was solid over his 5 2-3 innings, allowing a two-run single in the fourth and eight hits while striking out three Saturday in a 4-1 loss to San Diego. Analysis: Buehrle is building his innings up as he gets closer and closer to the 2010 opener for manager Ozzie Guillen. |
| 3/20/2010 | Brent Dlugach, SS (Det) | Dlugach hit two doubles Saturday in a 3-0 loss to the Phillies. Analysis: Not much is known about Dlugach, but he had two-hard-hit balls off Roy Halladay so he could have great potential. |
| 3/20/2010 | Marc Rzepczynski, SP (Tor) | Rzepczynski gave up three runs in the second inning Saturday in a 7-6, 10-inning win over Atlanta. Analysis: Rzepczynski is projected as Toronto's fourth or fifth starter in 2010 for manager Cito Gaston. |
| 3/20/2010 | Daisuke Matsuzaka, SP (Bos) | Matsuzaka is scheduled to pitch in a minor league instrasquad game at the player development complex Sunday. Analysis: It will be his first game activity of the spring after being slowed by back and neck ailments. |
